Mining BESS cooling for high-ambient and remote power systems

Mining BESS cooling has to hold battery and PCS temperatures through 45 °C+ summers, red dust and long gaps between service visits. ToneCooling designs liquid cold plates, manifolds and liquid cooling units for mine-site batteries, off-grid hybrid systems and fleet chargers.

Site conditions that change the cold plate design

AmbientSummer peaks above 45 °C narrow the coolant approach margin
DustSealed enclosures push heat into the liquid loop
DistanceEvery failure means a fly-in service trip
VibrationSkid- and vehicle-mounted equipment loads the joints and ports
Liquid cold plate for a 104-cell battery module, top view, stamped and brazed aluminium
Battery cold plates keep cell temperatures even through hot-site duty cycles.

How do high-ambient mine sites change BESS cooling?

These are the questions we raise in DFM review for remote-site programmes. Each one ends up as a line on the drawing or the test plan.

Supply to remote projects

How is supply planned for remote mining projects?

  • Prototype first. You can test single-piece custom samples in your enclosure before you commit to a project build.
  • Revision-locked records. Leak, pressure and ΔP data are tied to each drawing revision for your project handover file.
  • Spares built with the order. Field spares come from the same production lot.
  • Australian contact. The Carlton VIC team handles documentation, customs and after-sales.

Who we work with

We supply the equipment manufacturers and integrators who build systems for mine sites. We don’t contract directly as a site electrical or installation contractor.

A cold plate quotation is not approval of the complete installation. Design, installation and compliance responsibility stays with the system designer and the licensed installer.

FAQ

Mining and remote power cooling questions

What ambient temperature should we design for?

Use the worst-case site figure in your project specification. For many Pilbara and Goldfields sites that means design ambients well above 45 °C. We run the CFD load case at the coolant inlet your chiller or dry cooler can actually reach on that day.

Aluminium or copper for a remote BESS loop?

Battery and PCS plates are usually aluminium for weight and cost. If any copper part shares the loop, we flag the galvanic risk and the coolant inhibitor requirements in DFM.

Can you support equipment for underground mining?

We supply cold plates to the charger or equipment manufacturer. Underground certification of the finished equipment stays with that manufacturer. We provide the component documentation they need.

What test records come with each lot?

Helium leak and proof-pressure results as standard. Hydraulic ΔP and thermal checks are added where the acceptance plan calls for them. Every record is tied to the drawing revision.

How does battery cooling fit a mine-site microgrid?

In a mine-site microgrid, the battery and PCS smooth solar and diesel output and carry the load during peaks, so they cycle hard in the hottest part of the day. Liquid cold plates and a correctly sized liquid cooling unit keep cell and IGBT temperatures in range through those duty cycles.

Tell us about the site, not just the part

Send the equipment drawing along with the site ambient, coolant and duty cycle. Your DFM response will cover the high-ambient checks, not only the nameplate rating.
